Reflective yarn and keeping ears warm

I walk at night a lot, so visibility is a major concern of mine.  I was really pleased when Red Heart came out with a reflective yarn over a year ago.  For a short time it seemed to be available at all the big box craft stores, but now I can only find it locally at the Evil Empire aka WalMart.

This is a bulky or chunky acrylic (aside from the reflective material) yarn. While I’m pleased that it exists, I really wish that it was available in thinner yarns, and other materials, specifically cotton. Just because the nights are shorter in the summer, that doesn’t mean people aren’t sometimes out after dark after all, and it’s easier to find patterns for worsted* weight than bulky.

The reflective thread shows up nicely in a camera flash as shown here:

Because we had a cold snap in late January, I crocheted my first project in a bit of a hurry so I’d have it when going to the gym.

It’s a wide head band following a pattern called a Blissful Ear Warmer available from Red Heart’s website done with two strands held together. I’m not going to bother linking to the pattern because it’s all single crochet worked in rows using an M hook, then joined and edged with a single strand using a smaller hook. Not seeing the need for a copyrighted pattern given something that simple.

It did the job, but I don’t recommend it for people who are bald.  I’m currently working on an actual hat. Details when finished.

*Pronounced “wusted” like “Worcestershire sauce.”

Begging post

This is somewhat embarrassing. I’m currently broke, and need about a hundred bucks to cover the phone bill.  I have a donation button set up in the sidebar if anyone wants to chip in to help me out.

In the future, I hope to provide value in terms of content, and to use affiliate links such as one for Amazon to generate income, so I don’t have to go begging again.

Thanks to anyone who’s willing to assist me here.

Welcome to the Cottage

Well Howdy everyone. Come on in and set a spell.

[Turns off hokey accent]

I suppose I should introduce myself.  I call myself a crafty witch although the witch part seems to be falling away these days. I used to own a New Age/Pagan store and that’s one heck of a way to find out just how much nonsense is floating around those communities. Despite that, I still like a lot of the imagery. I will discuss pagan topics at least occasionally, but mostly I think this blog will be about crafts, and possibly cooking.

I still have a lot of the inventory from the store, so I’m going to be making an effort to sell it off. Note that the store closed in 2007, so anything I have predates that.

I’m hoping to get into designing patterns, and possibly making some stuff for sale. I’ll be starting with crochet although I also embroider and am interested in jewelry making.  If I can make some money off these endeavors, so much the better. I’ll also be reviewing related products, e.g. tools, and design software. Feel free to send donations my way if you find anything I post useful or otherwise of value.
